The City of Launceston Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 2013 by its Musical Director Stephen King and Concertmaster Michael Stocks. After a few rehearsals and several performances, it was decided to formalise the orchestra and officially launch the City of Launceston Philharmonic Orchestra in 2014.
Stephen and Michael’s desire in establishing the orchestra is to provide musicians in the greater Launceston area with the opportunity to perform with a semi-professional symphony orchestra. The sixty members of the orchestra travel from around the greater Launceston area, as well as the North-West and North-East coast to rehearsals, although none receive payment for playing in the orchestra.
The City of Launceston Philharmonic Orchestra performs challenging music ranging from the traditional to the contemporary. In its choice of programs the orchestra aims to achieve a balance between established masterpieces and an adventurous selection of less familiar music. It endeavours to perform music at the highest level and is dedicated to becoming the best amateur orchestra in the island state of Tasmania.
